Spatial Transformation Series: Construct II. 2005.
Rockite 30-minute patching concrete. Pour molded into a basswood formwork.
4 x 6 x 9 in.
The spatial transformation project was the first work we were given at The University of Michigan's School of Architecture and Urban Planning. The idea was to introduce us to the ideas of making and conceptual ideation through physical modeling.
The previous assignment (Construct I) was to create voids which engaged space in an "architectural way" by cutting away at sheets of white matboard. We layered these sheets into a single block.
Construct I became the jumping-off point for this, the second phase of the project. The continuity was revealed to us only after we completed and reviewed Construct I. Construct II was to be a concrete mass that somehow created a dialog with the spatial void of the first project. It was to remain within the same volumetric dimensions of the first project, 3 x 6 x 9 inches.
